Abstract
Among various cell transcription factors, nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) probably belongs to the most important ones. Its universal nature, ubiquitous expression in almost every cell and participation in various biological phenomena such inflammation, cell death, or cancer, resulted in rising great interest on NF-κB within world scientific community. Its role in inflammatory processes is evident in almost each condition. In the majority of cases, however, the activation of the factor in question leads to intensification of inflammatory processes.
Nevertheless, NF-κB proteins play a pivotal role in defense of the body against various pathogens. There is evidence that many anti-inflammatory drugs, such as glucocorticoids or aspirin act by the inhibition of particular components of the factor. Better understanding of mechanisms of action of NF-κB may yield specific tools able to switch off its proteins selectively active in various pathological conditions.
